The Misfortunes of a Spy and Her Mystic- Edinburgh Fringe 2026.

The Misfortunes of a Spy and Her Mystic is based upon Eve (Akaina Ghosh) whose a spy and begins the play in conversation with her boss (Deirdre Lovejoy) whose reviewing a file for a new case that has arrived.

Unlike other cases, Eve is meant to infiltrate with her female target as a friend and to find out what she is doing and what she has planned. The main message from her is to “Just think of it like any other client,” and earn her trust to get close enough to get her home.

However, the unsuspecting target is Meda, played by Joy Donze. Eve sets up a “chance” meeting between the couple at a bus stop and starts a conversation with her, Meda explains that she bleeding and menstruating in tune with “the blood moon” being at one with the earth. The audience soon realises that Meda’s grasp on reality is different from the majority of us.

Eve and Meda begin a friendship that builds on trust. Well, Meda is lured into believing that she can trust Eve. As the storyline develops, the depth of Meda’s illness becomes clearer. Although she’s not a horrible person and I found feeling sorry for her knowing what is being conspired about her behind her back.

Writer and actor Joy Donze is currently performing on crutches after breaking her leg in New York. The script has been adapted to incorporate this into her character, and Donze is incredibly agile on the crutches and never allows them to hinder her performance.

There are some interesting ideas in this play, and I felt slightly miffed, never finding out who Meda’s parents were or what they did. As they played a large role in the plays development.
