Joy Donze is bringing Misfortunes of a Spy and her Mystic to the Edinburgh Fringe this August. I have caught up with to talk about her show and more.

When and where are you performing at the Fringe this year?
We are performing Greenside @ George Street at the Olive theatre at 18:30.

What was the inspiration for your show?
I love thrillers and sci-fi films yet rarely get to see that world on stage. Being inspired by my real life working as a mental health coach, I wanted to explore the human condition and the psyche but set those themes inside a container that still lends itself to exciting storytelling.

Have you performed at any other Fringe Festivals before embarking on Edinburgh?

I was last at Edinburgh Fringe in 2017! I brought over my solo show as well as a 3 hander play/ both exploring the culture of youth in America.

What is the best piece of advice about working in Theatre you have received?
I have always been encouraged to self generate. It takes a lot of energy and requires a different kind of stamina, but the reward is worth it. I find that when you meet yourself with your work, you attract your people and audiences that your work can service.
Have you been able to stay within a realistic budget for your production? How have you raised funds to put your show on?
None of it has felt realistic. We are doing the show with four chairs yet… It feels delusional how much fringe costs. Lol
