Glasweigan comedian Susie McCabe: Coming of Rage is a cleverly constructed comedy performance about her life over the past two years. From her heart attack in 2024, the break up of her second marriage, a possibility of obtaining a stalker and the death of her father.
Don’t for one minute think you are about to be drawn into a self-pity production, navigating all these unhappy events as it’s far from it. She briefly moves in with “loved up” friends and their judgemental “cockapoo” after moving out from her ex, and her encounters with online dating are definitely relatable. And as Frankie Boyle tells her, she is “slightly” well known now, and this has its own pitfalls, perhaps even a stalker!
As a woman a few years older than McCabe, I totally understand some of the frustrations she faces as you get older. The pitfalls of online dating, dealing with ageing parents, and the range of menopause symptoms. Although I am not in a “slightly” well-known bracket.
Hecklers and audience members who decide to disregard and disrespect McCabe will understand that Coming of Rage is literal and she will evict you from the theatre. It was fantastic to see a comedian take charge of their space and remove unnecessary disruptive audience members. This alone was met with an enthusiastic round of applause.
No subject is safe or off limits, and when you listen to a comedian who observes everything through the comedy lense, you never quite know where the storyline is going next. McCabe is a naturally gifted storyteller and had the audience completely with her all night.
This is one comedy performance that I didn’t want to end quite so soon and would have loved another half an hour. I look forward to her next show to see what happens next in her life. If you are at the Edinburgh Fringe this year, I highly recommend catching this comedian.
