Dinosaurs wasn’t quite what I was expecting. I expected comedy and dinosaur’s antics of some description, although not sure what. Especially as the costume worn by Mandy Rubeli playing Norma is exceptionally well made.
Instead, it’s a time travelling story about a dinosaur that’s been transported through time and landed in a college kitchen. Claire (Hailey Hudson) discovers the dinosaur and has no idea what to do with it.
She calls her best friend Hayden (Devin Stone) to help her try and work out what they can do with the dinosaur. However, they first have to work out why it has been sent there in the first place!
This is where the play takes a dark twist, and Claire finally opens up to her friend about a life changing sexual assault that she had been subjected to when she was 15.
Hayden is horrified that he hadn’t any idea that this had ever happened and wants to help her find closure.
Without giving away too many spoilers, the dinosaurs returning and the assault are connected. Claire and Hayden just need to work out how. leading Claire to decide to face her past.
It’s an interesting idea and the only dinosaur themed play I saw this year at the Edinburgh Fringe.
