Baker Street Ladies-Edinburgh Fringe 2025.

Baker Street Ladies is set in 221B Baker Street reception room Mrs Hudson, Mary Watson and Irene Adler are all trying to pin down the famous detective Sherlock Holmes while they visit they each describe the impact the busy detective has on their lives.

Writer and performer Lexi Wolfe takes on the role of each of the ladies with believable ease. Mrs Hudson flits the feather duster around while the room while tidying up after Holmes.

She describes how his antisocial behaviour impacts her home and the damage caused by the experiments he carries out while trying to solve cases.

Each of the three monologues offers an insight into how the famous detective impacted those around him. Holmes’s brilliance in solving complex crimes is never in question. It is the day-to-day frustration and his inability to consider anyone that can become frustrating to navigate.

However, despite their frustration a sense of respect and affection can be heard through each of three ladies

Wolfe‘s performance is flawless throughout and each character appears in a different costume befitting of their status. I found myself feeling the depths of despair and abandonment felt by Mary Watson, whose husband Dr Watson is often called upon day and night by Holmes. Mary is left to deal with things herself and feels like an outsider in their marriage.

The children in the audience for this performance were invested throughout, and not one of them became restless or bored. Wolfe had captured their attention and managed to hold it. There was a small muttering after the first costume change about whether they thought it was a different actor.

Baker Street Ladies is an alternative production to many Sherlock Holmes plays or adaptations available during the Edinburgh Fringe.  There’s no mystery or suspense instead a well-crafted insight into the women involved in his life and their opinions on how he behaves.

I agree! Baker Street Ladies is an excellent piece of work, written and performed by a woman at the top of her game. Like you, I was most affected by the plight of poor Mary Watson, whose pain and conflict is shown with great nuance and sensitivity.
