Horrorshow by Chronic Insanity tells the story of two friends who live in Newport, The Isle of Wight. Dan (Doug Deans) and Olly (Joe Matty), who have been friends for years. Anyone familiar with the island will know it’s like stepping back in time, and I can understand why teenagers could get bored.
Olly’s family is about to move off the island to London, and Dan is devastated at the thought of losing his friend. For one last adventure that can potentially change their lives. Dan steals his mum’s boyfriends rucksack of weed and hatches a plan to sell at the Isle of Wight festival.
However, they can’t just walk in as they don’t have the money for tickets or could get the weed past security. Things certainly don’t go to plan, and Dan doesn’t make the money he needs.
There’s a lot of loose ends left in the storyline that would benefit from being tied up in this one. Especially as the two briefly meet up after a few years have passed.
The play is part narrative and part musical. Although the acoustics weren’t very good in the room they were performing in and it didn’t work as well as it could have. Some of the lyrics weren’t easy to hear at times.
Horrorshow has potential, and in this productions would benefit with an additional five minutes to bring in a few conclusions.
