Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat-Theatre Royal Portsmouth

The Portsmouth Players brought big energy to the stage of the Theatre Royal Portsmouth on opening night with their vibrant performance of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

The set and the varying musical styles bring a modern and humorous lens to the story of Joseph and his 11 brothers. Jealous of the favourite son, the brothers betray him and sell him as a slave.

The story follows Joseph’s misfortune, his conviction in his dreams, and his rise to success as the Pharaoh’s trusted advisor. Meanwhile, the brothers face famine (cue an excellently choreographed number with a baguette!) and go in search of food in a more prosperous land. Ultimately, this is a story of betrayal, hope, and forgiveness, with the family reunited in a colourful ending.

The stage was full with a huge cast and everyone giving it their all, but a special mention has to go to the two Narrators, Emily Horner and Kayleigh Pendry, their stunning voices and storytelling had me hooked on their every word. Archie Mac was very at home on the stage and delivered a stand-out performance as Joseph, belting out favourites like Any Dream Will Do.

There are some great comedic moments throughout, from the brothers and wives hoedown to an Elvis style Egyptian Pharaoh – all adding to the joyful vibe of this musical. There were some technical difficulties which may have been the reason that a couple of cast members were difficult to hear clearly in their songs, this made those sections of the story harder to follow, however the cast coped well.

Fortunately, the visual storytelling was so strong that nothing was lost. The choreography was on point with every cast member, including the children, bringing some dazzle to the stage.

Brilliantly directed by Jo Alldridge, this is a fitting tribute to celebrate 100 years of the Portsmouth Players. They’ve ended their centenary year in a technicolor explosion of joy. It’s a toe tapper and the music will stay with you long after you leave the theatre.
The production runs until Sunday, 1st November.
