Part of the launch day at Fareham Live I caught up with Poppy Valentine, who is going to be performing as Jill in her first main Pantomime role this year. In previous years, she has performed in the ensemble.
If you could play any Pantomime role, which would you choose?
Jasmine in Aladdin, as she’s not a typical princess role. She’s also my favourite princess and doesn’t want to confirm to the rules.
How do you feel about being part of the first experience that some children will have at the Theatre?
I absolutely love it. I have been dancing since I was two and have been inspired by my older sister to carry on regardless, and I hope that I can pass that onto the younger audience members.
Can you remember you first Pantomime?
Cinderella at The Mayflower, with the talented Gok Wan. Then, a few years ago, I was actually in Pantomime with him, and he remembered that production. It felt like I had gone full circle, and it was a brilliant time working with him.
Which is your favourite Pantomime?
Peter Pan. It’s action-packed and has lots of swashbuckling action. The lead female roles aren’t the classic princess, which I really like.
Are you going to take a well-deserved break in January?
At the moment, it’s a break. Although I have been on call back for a couple of recent auditions, watch this space.
What’s your favourite cake?
Lemon drizzle.
How many times have you performed in Pantomime?
Three times so far. This is my first main role in a Pantomime, though, and I am really looking forward to playing Jill.
