With the Edinburgh Fringe only a couple of weeks away now. I have caught up with Amanda Rubeli to chat about her upcoming show Dinosaurs, which will be at the Fringe for the whole run.
What was the inspiration for your show?
Dinosaurs is a personal piece very loosely reflecting true events from my life, but most of the story grew from my imagination. I was interested in exploring the emotional truth behind those experiences, rather than recreating them exactly as they happened (except for the real-life dinosaur, that happened, obviously).
Have you performed at any other fringe festivals before embarking on Edinburgh?
I have performed at the Las Vegas Fringe, and my theatre collective Nightmare Lizards has been performing at the Hollywood Fringe for the past several years.
Have you been given any advice or help from performers or creatives who have previously been to the Edinburgh Fringe?
The best advice I’ve received has been to take care of myself and make rest a priority. With so many opportunities at the Fringe, I’ve learned that you can’t say yes to everything. I’ve been encouraged to stay focused on my “why” for being at the Fringe so I can make intentional choices about which shows, events, and opportunities to prioritize.
What is the best piece of advice about working in Theatre you have received?
Be kind, support other artists, and celebrate their work, see as much theatre as you can, read theatre literature, and never stop practising your craft.
Are you planning on seeing any shows this year? If so, do you have recommendations?
I’m hoping to see as many shows as I can! Two I’m especially excited about are Mark Vigeant’s Out There and Greg Nussen’s QWFWQ. They are both fantastic artists whose work has thrived at Hollywood Fringe.
