Kirsty Mann brings a comedy-horror to The Edinburgh Fringe this year called Corpse. I have caught up with her ahead of August to find out a bit more.
When and where are you performing at the Fringe this year?
Summerhall 6-30 August at 3:15PM
What was the inspiration for your show?
My show is a one woman comedy-horror and it is based on a true story. My husband and I bought a house. Sure, it was derelict, and in a “bad area”, and someone had just died in it… but it was the only thing we could afford. After moving in, strange things started happening. The taps turned themselves on and off. The toilet flushed spontaneously. A hand print appeared on the ceiling. The washing machine moved across the room… AND THEN… Well, I can’t say, it’s a spoiler. But suffice to say, I didn’t believe in ghosts. I do now. The show won Best Theatre at the Adelaide Fringe in March of this year.
When did you first step on the stage as a performer?
Age 3, as the hungry troll in Billy Goats Gruff. Absolutely perfect casting.
What is the best piece of advice about working in Theatre you have received?
This is very specific to self-producing at the fringe, but I recently was told “do the smallest room you can afford”. It takes some pressure off, you can sell out and therefore generate buzz more easily, which in turn drives demand… And mostly it’s way more relaxing and so easier to have fun.
Who is your target audience?
It’s for lovers of comedy, and storytelling, and horror… It’s for anyone who believes in ghosts. And anyone who doesn’t believe in ghosts. Plus those who aren’t sure. Basically, it’s for everyone (provided they’re aged 18).
