Treasure Island adaptation by Blue Apple Theatre.

The story of Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson has been adapted and rewritten by the director of Blue Apple Theatre Richard Conlon and members of the cast. The story has been given a unique twist. Anyone who has seen past productions by them will be familiar with these changes to the traditional scripts.

The story begins in the local pub “The Admiral,” run by the Landlord and Landlady played by Jennie Grover and Tom Hatchett, who provide ale and pie to the locals, but don’t expect anything special as the locals discuss openly.

The patrons in the pub have known the local resident “Old Jim” (Neil Maddock) all his life, and on this one particular night every year, he comes into the pub to retell the story of Billy Bones, Black Dog and Blind Pew came to the pub and had an altercation which led to the treasure map being discovered and the adventures to the well fictional destination known as “Treasure Island.”

Sam Dace plays the infamous and ruthless Long John Silver who signs up to join the ships crew to find the treasure and a touch of mutiny on the way as he attempts to overturn Captain Smollett’s (George Collingwood) leadership and find the treasure first.

Costumes by Polly Perry, along with the excellent pub designed set by Mark Pyke, bring the swashbuckling adventure to life. The attention to detail is as ever  outstanding.

This production saw a few members joining the Blue Apple actors along with familiar and a couple of returning cast members. However, the one key factor in all their productions is the amount of enjoyment they are all getting from their performances and being on the stage.

If you haven’t been to watch a Blue Apple Theatre production before then, I can highly recommend catching their next.

Four Stars.
