If you’re looking for something slightly chaotic, macabre and mysterious then look no further than Jack Studio Theatre this festive season. Although it’s not a Pantomime there are a few “he’s behind you” moments.
Joe Newton and James Keningale take on two roles in this comedy farce The Mystery of Irma Vep a Penny Dreadful. Set in a country estate in the rolling dales the house is open to the elements and nature.

Lord Edgar Hill Crest (Joe Newton) brings home his new wife. Actress Lady Enid (James Keningale) back to the country estate to start their new life together. However, there is a third person in this relationship. His deceased wife who watches over them from above the mantlepiece and haunts their every move.
However, as the story unfolds or rather explained through the narrative of the housekeeper Jane and the groundsman Nicodemus, who have been there for many years. Lady Enid begins to fear for her fate.
Newton and Keningale are highly accomplished actors who switch between characters swiftly and effortlessly. From their voices to their clothing. At times they are so fast you’re left wondering how they have managed to change so fast. Never missing a beat or accidentally using the wrong voice.

The action and storyline are fast-paced and director Kate Bannister never lets the storyline slip or slow down. Along with the fantastic set designed by Karl Swinyard, the deceased wife in the portrait appears to be able to see the entire audience with her disapproving scowl, which can be rather unsettling at first.
