STUFFED-New Diaroma Theatre.

Raising awareness around the increased usage of food banks in the United Kingdom, STUFFED by Ugly Bucket is a high-energy clowning production with a serious message to try and help audiences understand who and why people use these food banks.

Before the play begins, there’s a community food kitchen in the theatre foyer, which offers a nice choice of food, which they cook fresh before the show and serve to anyone who wants to join them. All the food is made from surplus food, which would have been headed to landfills.

There’s a huge amount of food waste in this country, which is shocking when you consider how many people are suffering from food poverty.

STUFFED uses verbatim conversations from people who work in and use food banks. Debunking some of the myths and preconceived ideas many have about these places. The main ethos should always be “nonjudgmental.” Nobody knows when they might need a helping hand at some point. Especially at the moment with the constant rise in prices, the shocking cost of living at the moment.

At times, the performance can become extremely loud and chaotic, which can be overwhelming. However, this echoes the noise inside many people’s minds when everything becomes too much, and the struggle with finances just won’t go away.

“Heat or eat” will become a situation many will soon face again as we head into winter. If you find yourself in that situation, please do ask your local food banks. They are there to help and can often have links for other services, too.
