Tempest in a Teacup-Folkestone Live.

Shakespeare at any age can be a challenge to fully understand everything that is being said throughout the play. Tempest in a Teacup by Cut-Out Theatre is a children’s adapted version of The Tempest by William Shakespeare. For the hardened Shakespeare fan, there are also some original lines from the play used throughout.

The storyline remains the same in this edited version. Four actors take on all the roles, although one actor remains in the character of Aerial throughout. Please don’t mistake them for the ones found on a roof (joke used inside the performance) to get a television signal.

There is some audience participation during the play, which is all focused on the younger audience. From becoming the flowing river to adding some of the sound effects. However, they only have to join in if they choose to. There’s no pressure from the cast.

I especially liked the cardboard cut-out characters (which can be seen in the photo) that are used as costume props with the characters’ names added at the bottom. You could clearly see who was who when the actors changed from one to another character throughout the play.

This particular children’s adapted version was engaging and entertaining. Offering a clear and concise version of the Shakespeare classic play. Many of the children in the auditorium were watching and joining in at the appropriate parts.

It’s a fun adaptation with bubble machines, water pistols, and songs to keep the whole family entertained.

Four Stars.
