The Other Side of Murder written by Torben Betts is the new-comedy thriller based upon medium Darius Divine (host of The Other Side), a television show about to make a come back and relaunching his career.

Peter, whose alias is Darius Divine, played by Rufus Hound, has been relaunched by his wife Susannah (Carla Mendonça) and has three television shows coming up in his role as the celebrity medium Darius Divine.

Things seem to be up at last for Peter after being out in the “celebrity wilderness” for a long time. However, his indiscretion with Laura (Aisha Jawando) is about to threaten this new chapter, and he has to think on his feet and fast.

Susie Blake, in the role of Miriam, Peter’s mother in law whose razor sharp wit and cutting one-liners, doesn’t hide how she feels about him and tells her daughter frequently. Her obsession with Gilbert and Sullivan bursts through regularly.

Set in the open plan area of Peter and Susannah’s kitchen, dining room, lounge area, the couple are about to have their evening guests catered for by a French private chef. However, mistaken identity leads to dinner, and the evening is going from bad to worse at quite a pace.

Designer Colin Falconer’s set is homely, and it looks like the couple genuinely calls it home with what appears to be a well equipped kitchen area. I especially liked all the board games under the armchair as that’s where I keep mine too.

Director Philip Franks brings “death” and mystery to life in this new comedy thriller. The ending is refreshing and nothing like I had expected. That’s all I am willing to divulge as this play is full of spoilers. Which is great for the audiences but not as easy when writing a review.

The Other Side of Murder is a solid production with a really great cast who has a good rapport of the stage, bringing this new thriller to a brilliant conclusion.
