The Bob Ross Effect debuted this year at the Edinburgh Fringe. It is the latest production by Sarah-Louise Young, who uses the famous American artist and art instructor Bob Ross as the basis for the new show.
Bob Ross created and hosted the television programme The Joy of Painting, which aired between 1983 and 1994, and I believe it is still available on YouTube if you search it up.
Like many of the audience members, I would say I can’t draw or paint. However, in this show, we are all invited to try our hand and release our own inner creativity and make art work with the crayons and paper provided during the performance. Have a go, you might just surprise yourself!
The Bob Ross Effect was inspired by the death of one of Young’s closest friends and burlesque performer Lynn Ruth Miller. The show is moving at times as Young explores love, grief, and the damage caused by undiagnosed mental health. Through art, music, and narrative. Along with the iconic wig and beard that Ross was known for.
There’s no pressure to become involved with the show. However, audience participation is encouraged with the sharing of the artwork. The atmosphere is incredibly gentle and relaxed that, hopefully, audiences like the one I was in will continue. Just to add there were some really nice pictures created.
A special mention has to go to beautiful original songs composed by Jordan Paul Clarke and sung by Young who has an incredible voice and for those of you who saw An Evening Without Kate Bush, will know how talented Young is and if you haven’t then I can assure you that you’re in for a treat.
