Theiyā Arts Dance Collective’s Maiden! Mother! Whore! is an interdisciplinary dance-theatre work blending South Asian classical and contemporary dance, spoken word, interactive projection, and live audience encounter. At DB1 Assembly @ Dance Base, the Fringe production takes the form of a new theatrical adaptation, exploring how women are shaped by social structures, institutions and expectations, and asking who gets to define our identities.
Before taking their seats, audience members are faced with a display draped in red fabric and covered with postcards. They are invited to choose an image that draws them in, write a response on the reverse, and add it to the collective’s growing library. These postcards have become an archive of the project’s journey, carrying traces of previous audiences and offering a bridge to those who will encounter the work in the future. The exchange, therefore, extends beyond performer and spectator: each audience becomes part of an ongoing conversation.
The performance itself unfolds in three broad sections. It begins with a set piece developed through the company’s choreographic process, followed by a series of improvisations (Minor Acts) shaped by audience responses and offering a glimpse into the development of the more polished work. The hour concludes with intersections, returning to a finished choreographic piece.
Throughout, the dancers investigate womanhood through fragments of movement, sound and audience-generated stimuli. Themes of gender conditioning in childhood emerge as the performers question the expectations placed upon women and the ways they are required to present themselves.
The cast is a particular strength. They support and respond to one another instinctively, building movement together in a process that feels genuinely alive. There is something admirable about watching choreography develop in real time, and the company approaches this with considerable skill and commitment.
The performance is held together by the music of Scotland-based singer-songwriter Giulia Drummond, whose haunting, lyrical voice, and rich palette of tuned and untuned percussion create an evocative soundscape. Her contribution gives the production a depth that reflects the complexity and richness of the ideas being explored.
There is still room for development, however. The piece feels as though it is developing in real time, testing its form, language, and identity. That sense of incompleteness is not necessarily a weakness; rather, it suggests a work with considerable potential to grow. Maiden! Mother! Whore! feels less like a finished statement than an evolving conversation, one that invites its audiences to help determine where it goes next.
