Cricket & The Freebugs-Edinburgh Fringe 2026.

What a brilliant way to start your day at the Edinburgh Fringe in St Andrew’s Square watching Cricket and the Freebugs. Although this is billed as a children’s show, I would highly recommend it to anyone of all ages if you like live music.

It is 1972, and a small field cricket has aspirations to become a famous musician, and it’s a storyline about the highs and lows of his journey. The rude and unscrupulous agent he meets along the way.

Eventually, he finds his “people” and entertaining audiences and rising to the fame heights that he has been searching for. However, as with all storyline things, he takes a nose dive due to his ego and empty promises, and he needs to mend a few friendship bridges before he finds what he has been looking for, without realising it.

For a budget, Fringe production their makeup to interpret the bugs they are performing as is brilliant. The five cast/band members are all highly accomplished musicians who have a fantastic stage presence and rapport. Their stage captures the early 70’s “flower power” era. Everything they have chosen and put together just fits their production perfectly.

Cricket and the Freebugs is one of those rare gems that you stumble upon at the Edinburgh Fringe and come out feeling uplifted by their music and know you have watched something exceptional. It’s definitely worth getting up early for and making the journey across Princess Street to watch them.
