Alan Turing a Musical Biography is told through the eyes of Zara Cooke, who among other female roles in the play is the author of a book celebrating and explaining the groundbreaking work carried out by Alan Turing (Joe Bishop) during WWII and the devastating treatment he received as a homosexual.

The touching verbatim story about one of the United Kingdom’s saviours during World War II is marred with sadness and grief. Alan Turing the genius who cracked the German Enigma machine while working at the secret base, Bletchley Park never truly received the praise and recognition he deserved during his lifetime.

Bishop captures the genius in Turing writing out his mathematical theory on the stage floor with gusto in a way that suggests he is doing it for the first time with genuine surprise and excitement.

Joel Goodman’s musical score befits the storyline and adds depth to the thoughtful and compassionate storyline. Each number was performed passionately by Bishop and Cooke.

Turing was treated cruelly by fellow countrymen for being “homosexual” and sleeping with a man. His barbaric treatment reminds us of the inhumane way gay men were treated for far too long and the daily persecution that caused many to live secret and double lives.

Before this musical reaches the West End in 2024 I am sure further changes will take place. I certainly look forward to catching it again once it transfers.

Playing to a full house on the day there’s still a fascinating “enigma” surrounding the genius who left the world before his time. A Musical to honour and praise the life of Alan Turing.
