Starting off the evening of comedy was Ed Patrick’s supporting comedian Chelsea Birkby, who was very engaging and spends time trying to gauge the dynamics of the audience.
I hadn’t come across Birkby before and would be interested in going to see her solo show if it fitted into my schedule.
Numb and Number is the latest touring comedy show by the NHS anaesthetist Ed Patrick. It blends together Patrick’s experiences working in the NHS Theatre’s and working with more experienced anaesthetists. Whose out look on their job is different to his.
The comedy is based predominantly on observations with a very honest insight into how the patient dats system works. I hadn’t realised it was bought from the veterinary world and some of the patient data has to be changed each time the Dr opens the “long winded” system.
From some of the chatter around me in the auditorium from other NHS workers, these themes and situations are familiar, and they also encounter similar problems too during the work day.
Patrick explains about a funny and awkward situation where he performed an intimate examination with a male patient. Acting out the awkward predicament he had put himself in, and the details are funny and cringeworthy. I would have liked to have heard how the patient had viewed the encounter.
The delivery is smooth and entertaining. Patrick offers a funny and honest insight into his day to day job. There’s nothing crude or outrageous about his experiences. It’s well delivered observation and experiences that let you see the funny side of working at the NHS, and let’s face it, humour would be a must in that working environment.
