The wonderful charm of the Edinburgh Fringe is that you will find the rare gems nestled in venues, and you find them when you least expect it.
Meteors is performed in the “Former Ladies Locker Room” at the bottom of Summerhall Arts, which was once the Veterinary University in Edinburgh, and there’s still a lot of evidence of its original purpose still there.
Melissa Pullinger lost her mum seven years ago to a rare melanoma cancer when Melissa was just 20 years old. The play is fragmented throughout the storyline, tackling darker parts in digestible sections and returning after a brief calmer interlude. As she takes the audience on a deeply personal, insightful journey into life before and after her mum.
The story is set during Melissa’s time when she was walking up to a spot one night after the pub closed to a watch a meteor shower. It was meant to be a social event, but as the pub closed, everyone else made their excuses and went home. Alone and thoughtfully looking back, Melissa embarks on her story.
Melissa is a wonderful storyteller bringing her mothers memory to the stage with humour, honesty, and love. She doesn’t want any sympathy she simply wants you to embark on her journey with her and perhaps catch a glimpse of the meteors at the same time. Nature is always unpredictable.
Anyone who is familiar with having any counselling will recognise the ending of the play when the audience is safely placed back onto the ground in the grass on the hill, awaiting the Meteors to start appearing in the night sky.
Directed by Connor Reidy with an original soundscape by composer Will Spartalis. I don’t think this will be the last festival or theatre outing that Meteors embark on.
