Andrew White: What a Life! We all have stories, and all good comedians base their material on what they know and what they experience. When it comes to death, they often immortalise their loved ones in their comedy as they process the pain and loss that they are experiencing.
White has done exactly that with three people that he was really close to all dying his mother, his grandfather, and his friend, the comedian Gareth Richards, who died in 2023. Each of them left something behind that he learned from them and continued to use it in his life. Especially his Mum, who was a solicitor. Knowing the correct language to use when appealing traffic fines has given him a 76% success rate when he appeals a fine. It is a very handy trick to learn.
Right from an early age, White has found that he has an excellent rapport with older people (in a non- paedo) way. He likes their stories and company. Especially his clowning friend from Salisbury, Jonathan the Jester. Who welcomed the guests at Andrew’s 18th birthday party.
Although death features quite a bit throughout the set, it’s not a morbid show. It is more of a celebration of their lives and an insight into the untrained world of celebrants. In his experience, his Grandads one was very questionable!
If you ever wanted to know more about a “living wake,” White explains about the one his Mum held after she was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Sounds like a much nicer event that an actual wake. We all need a Jonathan the Jester to entertain the guests.
White is an up and coming comedian who’s got a long career ahead of him if he chooses to continue to work in stand-up.
