“On December 21, 1988, Pan Am Flight 103 took off from Heathrow Airport in London bound for New York City. Among the 259 passengers and crew were 190 Americans.”
There are currently several television productions retelling the story of the devastating terrorist attack exploring what happened days after these events but none of them are a patch on FUSELAGE which is shared to the Edinburgh Fringe audiences with compassion and love.
FUSELAGE performed by Annie Lareau tells the verbatim story about how her friends (those killed on the flight) met and formed their friendships. These beautiful young people who were wiped out are brought back to life through the love Lareau still has for them.
Lareau should have been on that flight with her 35 Syracuse University classmates as they headed home for Christmas. Due to money, she was booked on the flight the day after.
FUSELAGE combines the events taking place between the friends in the lead up to the terrorist attack alongside filmed footage from a few years beforehand leading up to the bombing about what was taking place in the Middle East from historical news clips.
Brenda Joynder and Peter Dylan O’Connor bring all the characters to life throughout the performance each friend depicted on the screen behind the stage. You automatically suspend your disbelief that the actor and the photo don’t match as the audience is invested in the joy they are having growing up and creating their new lives, which are soon to be wiped out.
FUSELAGE is a tribute to all those who lost their lives and highlights how precious life is and that one event can change thousands of lives forever. I suggest taking tissues as you will more than likely need one or two.
In 1988 the landscape in Lockerbie changed and the scale of the terrorist attack killed 243 passengers, 16 crew members, and 11 residents in Lockerbie. In total the victims came from 21 different countries.
