It’s Pantomime time at Greenside at the Edinburgh Fringe this year. What better choice than Bake Off: The Great British Pantomime the popular television show that has inspired the panto, four places are set for the bakers to start the final with pastry week
In traditional Bake Off style, the Pantomime is hosted by two charismatic and talented presenters dressed in sparkly waistcoats and holding everything together as the cakes fail to rise and ingredients disappear. Who is sabotaging the bakers? Along with the stars of the show in the form of the traditional Pantomime Dame and their sidekick.
I haven’t personally watched The Great British Bake Off I have seen enough adverts and clips to understand the way the show is laid out. With the names of characters slightly adjusted for comedic effect like Mary Raspberry and Paul Hereford. I expect that there are other references in the Pantomime that fans of the show would recognise which I didn’t although it never spoilt my enjoyment of the show.
The lyrics of the well-known songs have all been adjusted to fit in with the baking theme like the well-known ABBA song The Winner Takes It All becomes The Winner Bakes It All. I won’t spoil the rest though. It is thoroughly entertaining and very funny.
Director Ella Barnett has mixed together the perfect recipe of Pantomime ingredients to delight audiences at the Fringe. I hope they take on further from the Fringe and can perform it somewhere else this Christmas, perhaps just changing the tartlets to mince pies and throwing in a bit of tinsel and voila you have a Christmas Baking Treat.
