What does a Man Shed mean to you? Is it an escape room, a bolt hole somewhere where a man can go to relax and be himself shutting out the outside world? It can be anything you choose it to be as we discover in MAN SHED a touching story brought to life by actor Ron Emslie.
Alec often pops around to the shed to visit and chat, even sharing some “haut cuisine”. On one occasion he broke one of the chair legs when he sat down which needs to be fixed but ended up being propped up on a stack of books and never quite finished.
Loneliness is a silent killer in the ageing population and is underrepresented in the Theatre world. MAN SHED brings to the stage the destruction and devastating effects this can have on somebody who is losing everyone around them through old age and the ailments that can come with it.
Many of the things in his shed are broken or old. He explains getting rid of things just because they are old or broken doesn’t mean that they couldn’t be repurposed or valued. Just like the older population, they have stories and life skills still valuable to younger generations.
Man Shed is a sad tale that touches your soul and the older you get you realise that this could be your future and it’s a horrible prospect. I would expect some audience members will leave the play thinking about elderly relatives, I wonder how many will call or visit them as a result?
