First-time Fringe performers Camilia O’Grady and Daniel Grice bring to the stage We’re All Mad Here looking at the realities and stigma faced by children with dyslexia and dyspraxia, the names in themselves a minefield with those who have the conditions.
To a child fitting in with family and siblings is paramount and when you don’t through no fault of your own it becomes frustrating and difficult to comprehend. Especially when someone brands around the word “stupid”! Definitely, one thing they are not.
The couple are talented and very energetic throughout the entire performance. There are lots of additional characters and props used in the performance. With a bit of care and to slow the delivery down it would make a huge difference as following at times isn’t easy. These changes wouldn’t take much work and their show would hugely benefit.
It was a good explanation when they described these conditions as their superpowers. Brains work in mysterious ways and although the wiring is different it allows people to see things differently and often “outside the box”.
I understand the complexity first-hand of the brain chaos created by dyslexia when faced with certain tasks in a school environment. I would do everything I could not to read aloud in class and still will as an adult. The words take on a life of their own on a page, imagine reading out loud under the influence of drink.
