The story of the driven and flawed late Steve Jobs is bought to life by writer Joel Goodman and performed by Stephen Smith in Apple of My Eye.
The four apple computers take centre stage each one containing a slide show which is operated by Smith throughout the performance. Mapping out the “Apple” creators journey and success.
The factual account of Job’s life from humble beginnings, adopted, feelings of abandonment which he later does the same to his first child, Lisa in denying she was his to how he was fired from his own company! The emotional roller coaster let’s you dislike and sympathise with him in equal measures.
Finding out about his love of calligraphy and keeping things simple offered an insight in the design technology used with the products he created looking as sleek at the back as it does at the front, a piece of advice he was given by his adopted father that you take pride in the whole job, even the parts unseen.
Job’s I knew of by name, who hasn’t hsard of “Apple” yet I had very little knowledge of who he was and what he had done.
The writing and direction are tightly woven to explain the life of a genius whose work and legacy will remain in use for decades to come.
Joel Goodman’s musical score offers a thought-provoking insight into how the creator potentially viewed himself and how he operated as a businessman.
If there’s one play to “must see” this Edinburgh Fringe then make Apple of My Eye one of them.
