Wêla Kapela Productions bring two productions to the Edinburgh Fringe this year. Vincent, his quest to love and be loved and A Star is Born The Rise and Fall of Judy Garland.

Daniel Anderson in the main role of Vincent Van Gogh plays all the other characters in the story of his life. Anderson offers an outstanding performance both acting and singing. The role appears to be emotionally demanding as the story surrounding Van Gogh’s life is problematic from the beginning and continues throughout.

Van Gogh led a troubled life moving from one place to the next often as a result of being asked to leave as he had behaved unacceptably to those around him. Love eluded him, never knowing how to show it in a way that it he was positively relieved.

Throughout the performance, many of Van Gogh’s masterpieces are projected onto the ceiling casting a Van Gogh to shadow across Anderson as he performed. Along with the musical accompaniment from Germaine Gamiet.

There is much to learn and understand about the history surrounding the art produced by Van Gogh and consider that during his lifetime that his art wasn’t revered in the way it is today. Troubled throughout by depression and mental illness life for this great painter was marred with hurt and loss.

Watch out for the name Daniel Anderson in the future. His performance was flawless and his ability to bring the sad tale to life with compassion and warmth has left a lasting impression.
