Operation Mincemeat tells the real-life story of when MI5 agents decided to use a stolen body and falsified invasion plans to deceive Hitler in 1943, which went onto win World War II. Yes, this actually happened. Although probably not in the same flamboyant style as this musical production.

MI5 agents are called to their boss,  Johnny Bevan, played by Jamie Rose-Monk to offer a new decoy plan that could help the war effort and change Hitlers course of direction. Bevan doesn’t work alone and has his adoring secretary, Hester, played by Christian Andrews, who oversees the efforts and liases with the agents.

Andrews is an incredible actor and plays a wide range of characters throughout the musical with believable ease from the American Air Force pilot to the flamboyant mortuary manager.

One of my favourite characters, played by Rose-Monk , is Spilsbury, who sweats rather a lot apparently. The delivery in the briefcase scene is brilliant, and I can’t imagine how long it is to perfect, especially with the phone cables.

Alongside are cast members Holly Sumpton Ewen Montagu, Charlotte Hanna-Williams in the role of Jean Leslie and Seán Carey playing Charles Cholmondeley, who originally devised the plan of Operation Mincemeat. Each of their performances were incredible and such a strong rapport throughout.

The speed of the costume changes alone is worth watching. One minute, the cast is on a submarine and the next German soldiers. Incredibly slick and professional performers.

Even if historical World War II productions are not normally your choice of entertainment. Operation Mincemeat might just change your opinion. From start to finish, the Musical had me transfixed to the stage as the comedy farce unfolded before me. This is one of those musicals that has all the right ingredients for a fantastic night at the theatre. Definitely not one to miss as it tours around the country and across the continent.
