Gary Wilmot’s debut play While They Were Waiting is a charming two-hander play starring Wilmot and Steve Furst. If nothing else, it is an absolute treat to be able to see two longstanding incredibly talented actors performing in an intimate space and watch their craft up close.
How does a friendship start? Bix, played by Steve Furst, is waiting. In fact, he is always waiting and prides himself in being an incredibly patient person when it comes to waiting. This is a useful trait to have as he is now waiting indefinitely for the yellow door to open. He has been invited to the place to meet the person who lives there.
Mulberry arrives first with his umbrella and briefcase, dressed in a smart suit. However, the umbrella is just a skeleton now, and if it rained, it would offer no protection from the rain! Although Mulberry isn’t in the slightest bit concerned about that and us simply happy to be doing his favourite pastime, waiting.

Writer and performer Gary Wilmot plays Bix, who decided to join and chat to Mulberry whether he likes it or not. At first, Mulberry isn’t interested in striking up any form of friendship. However, Bix doesn’t give up easily and isn’t going anywhere else.
The dialogue is rich and funny in places. Wilmot and Furst have a wonderful onstage rapport, and the majority of the conversations that take place between the “strangers” come across as organic and natural. It was an absolute pleasure to watch.
Hannah Danson’s set is bright and inviting with the bright yellow door and fluffy white clouds. An enticing sunny day setting is the perfect setting for somewhere for Mulberry to wait. Even though he hasn’t any idea what he is waiting for.
