Park Theatre’s Gawain and the Green Knight blends the centuries old Arthurian legend within a contemporary corporate setting. The result is a sharply observed, often very funny reimagining of medieval legend through the lens of workplace culture, tech anxiety, and the relentless quest for “spark”.
At the centre of the story is Gary, or as the company insists, Gawain, played with endearing understatement by Felix Grainger. A diligent cybersecurity worker at the Camelot Corporation, Gary is the classic office underdog: competent, overlooked, and repeatedly told he lacks that elusive ‘spark’. Everything changes for him when his zealously energetic boss, King Arthur, brilliantly portrayed by Cara Steele, fires him just before the company’s Christmas celebration. Steele’s character is driving a total corporate makeover, introducing mandatory mythical nicknames and a new, jarring office greeting: a loud “Huzzah!
Meanwhile, Gabriel Fogarty-Graveson delivers a dynamic performance as the office bully and eager sycophant, perfectly capturing the spirit of every overly assertive yes-man you’ve ever encountered.
Balancing him is Laura Pujos, whose warmth and sincerity as Gary’s love interest, champions his worth to the executives, and her exquisite singing voice adds unexpected emotional depth to the show.
Perhaps the most inventive twist is the transformation of Merlin (voice over by Shaun Chambers) into an omnipresent AI chat bot, a clever nod to the way modern workplaces outsource wisdom and decision‑making, to digital systems.
The imaginative white set designed by Simon Nicholas features working lift doors centre stage that act as a portal between time zones and large filing cabinet style drawers arranged either side
Blending folklore with fluorescent lighting, Gawain and the Green Knight becomes a witty, imaginative reflection on identity, ambition, and the stories we tell about ourselves, whether in medieval quests or corporate corridors.
At just under two hours, it occasionally loses momentum, and a little careful editing would help the story land with greater impact.
