Anthony Spargo’s latest pantomime offering at Greenwich Theatre takes J.M. Barrie’s beloved tale of Peter Pan, the boy who never grows up and spins it into a riotous evening of cheeky humour, groan‑worthy gags, and unexpected twists. While the familiar framework remains, Peter and Wendy Darling, Captain Hook, The Lost Boys, Tinkerbell and Neverland, Spargo’s version gleefully subverts expectations with surreal set‑pieces and comic invention.
From the outset, the production revels in the pantomime tradition of Christmas cracker‑level jokes bringing audible groans from the audience, while a fishing expedition descends into a sea of fish puns. A “memory box” containing a Yoyo, Hoe and a bottle of rum epitomises the show’s delight in random silliness. Songs are cleverly reworked chart toppers with the lyrics rewritten with Spargo’s trademark wit, ensuring both familiarity and surprise.
Antony Spargo himself takes centre stage as Captain Hook, a suitably naughty villain who relishes every boo from the audience. There are no traditional Dames here but Louise Cirlecki and Paul Critoph as pirates Smee and Starkey provide reliable comic interludes, keeping the laughter flowing between the larger set‑pieces. The ensemble, in their many roles, give strong support and ensure the production feels full and vibrant.
‘Uncle’ Steve Markwic, ably assisted by guitarist Gordon Parrish and drummer Chris Wyles provide live music from the sides of the stage.
Characters are given fresh comic life: Wendy (Nikita Johal) finds herself in a car wash. Tinkerbell’s (Olivia Williamson) jealousy of Wendy escalates beyond Barrie’s original, culminating in her handing Captain Hook an elixir of life—a twist that keeps the villain centre stage and adds a new layer of mischief.
Ultimately, Greenwich Theatre’s Peter Pan is a festive treat: a show that invites laughter, groans, and gasps in equal measure. It honours Barrie’s timeless tale while reminding us that pantomime thrives on reinvention, cheek, and community spirit.
