Last night I had the pleasure of visiting the New Victoria Theatre Woking to see Sunny Afternoon, the award winning musical that traces the turbulent journey of The Kinks, one of Britains most influential rock bands. Set against the shifting social landscape of 1960’s Britain, the production follows the highs and lows of the band through the perspective of frontman Ray Davies, while weaving in many of their most celebrated hits.

The score is a catalogue of classics, from “You Really Got Me” and “Lola” to “Waterloo Sunset” and of course the title track – “Sunny Afternoon”. Musically the cast is superb with two performances being worthy of a special mention. First the drum solo by Mick Avory (played by Zakarie Stokes) a carefully constructed moment allowing some set change, but also a chance to showcase his talent. Secondly the acapella rendition of days by the band and one of their managers, which was just beautiful!

Danny Horn and Oliver Hoare shine as the Davies brothers, their performances layered with both tension and tenderness. The rocky (no pun intended) relationship between Ray and Dave is portrayed with authenticity, but what lingers is the sense of unspoken loyalty that binds them. Hoare in particular, delivers a standout performance, immersing himself so fully in the role that his commitment alone makes the production worth revisiting.

The band’s managers introduce subtle comedic aspects to the performance while also underscoring the social context and class distinctions between themselves and the band, adding an additional dimension to the narrative.

Sunny Afternoon ultimately succeeds as both a celebration of the band’s music and a thoughtful exploration of the pressures of fame. It is a production that balances spectacle with substance, ensuring that the audience leaves not only humming familiar tunes, but also reflecting on the ambition, rivalry and resilience.
