Voila! Theatre Festival is London’s panlingual festival that celebrates emerging artists from all different backgrounds and cultures. The festival runs across eight London venues until 23rd November. I have caught up with them ahead of their play Spin Aga!n which will be performing at Questor’s Theatre, Ealing on 19th & 20th November at 7pm.
Is the Voila Theatre Festival your production’s debut performance?
Yes! Not only that, but it is the debut performance for us as a company. We could not be more excited!
Who has been your inspiration from the Theatre world?
Whilst making SPIN AGA!N, we were heavily inspired by Forced Entertainment and Goat Island’s collaborative approaches to devising. Their ideas of ‘montage’ and ‘collage’ became key in the way we began to piece our show together, ordering and re-ordering small fragments of material. Funnily enough, this continuous process of rearranging, trying to make sense of it all, has become a core element of the final performance…
Where do you draw your inspiration from as a creative?
As a company, we are really drawn towards myths, folklore and ghost stories. We take inspiration not just from the epic stories of the past, but also the myriad of ways they have been shared throughout history, from Classical tragedies to folk songs, dances or even just the way a juicy tale is spun over a cheeky pint.
What is your favourite thing about the theatre industry?
The generosity you find when you’re working with the right people. The Fringe theatre community is great at sharing knowledge, advice and opportunities. Many of us now live away from our home countries and it’s been amazing to feel embraced by the international theatre community in London.
What is your least favourite thing about the theatre industry?
Writing applications! If we had a pound for every multi-paged google form we have had to fill out only to be rejected from an unpaid opportunity…
What is one piece of advice you would give to current theatre students?
The attitude and energy you bring into the room shape the way you work and the work you create. Your curiosity, generosity, and respect for your collaborators will always reflect in the final piece. Stay present, take risks, and remain open to discovery along the way!
