For die-hard fans of Friends this Opening Night at the Ambassadors Theatre Woking is a tongue in cheek tribute that captures the characters, key moments and humour of the original series.
The production is set in a recording studio which allows for simple set pieces and facilitates live scene changes by the crew to transition between Central Perk, Monica and Rachel’s apartment and of course Chandler and Joeys apartment.
The songs are used to move through the original TV show seasons at pace. Songs such as “How You Doin” and “Pivot” pay homage to key events in a light hearted manner. Vocally all performers were very strong including Amelia Atherton as Phoebe Buffay. Whilst perhaps not true to character, with a little artistic license, it worked in this musical parody.

The show cleverly incorporates cameo-style appearances from beloved side characters like Janice, whose signature “Oh my God!” moments kept things light-hearted and entertaining. These touches added a layer of nostalgia that fans will truly appreciate.
The detailed study of the original characters is evident, with excellent reflection by wardrobe, wigs and make up teams to make the new actors as similar to the iconic ones we know and love. Daniel Parkinson, portraying Chandler Bing, deserves a special mention for his spot-on mannerisms and delivery — a clear nod to Matthew Perry’s iconic portrayal. Ronnie Burden also shines as Joey Tribbiani, bringing warmth and charm to the role with a performance that feels both familiar and not too forced. Edward Leigh showed his versatility by playing the warm up artist, Gunther, Tom Selleck and Paolo, all with different personas.
However, for those unfamiliar with Friends, the fast-paced references and character-driven humour might leave you wondering what’s going on. This show is very much tailored to those who’ve watched a good portion of the 236 episodes.
In summary, if you’ve spent years laughing along with Ross, Rachel, Monica, Chandler, Joey, and Phoebe, this is an evening out that will leave you smiling. But if you’re new to the world of Central Perk, you might find yourself missing the inside jokes.
Light hearted entertainment for Friends of Friends
