Here & Now showing at the Ambassador Theatre in Woking as part of its UK tour is the new jukebox musical featuring the hits of pop sensation Steps. The story centres around the friendship of four employees of Better Best Bargains supermarket.
Caz, (Rebecca Lock) at 49, is expecting some important news that will potentially change her life. With her loyal friends Vel (Jacqui Dubois), Neeta (Rosie Singha) and Robbie (Blake Patrick Anderson) by her side, she is determined to turn this summer into their very own “Summer of Love.” Before she turns 50. Through heartbreak, (Caz tells of her baby Jack ‘being born asleep’), breakups, makeups, betrayal and forgiveness the friends are there for each other. It’s not the most believable story line but is entertaining never the less.

The modern ‘superstore’ set by Tom Rogers is a dazzling display of colour and illumination with the stacked shelves covering the theatre wings and the multicoloured “5,6,7,8” above the stage and on the cash desks.
Rebecca Lock as Caz delivers an outstanding and impressive performance as the lead of the show. She is present for most of the production, captivating the audience throughout. With a remarkably strong voice, Lock offers a heartfelt and dynamic portrayal that vividly reimagines Steps’ songs.

River Medway plays Drag Queen Jem; brilliantly capturing the nuances of a drag artist even when in street clothes. His Chain Reaction performance in the frozen goods and electrical appliances aisle is a joy to behold.
Jacqui Dubois is relatable as world weary Vel, and Blake Patrick Anderson’s Robbie is loveable and charismatic. Finty Williams plays store boss Patricia with an enthusiasm reminiscent of the late Miriam Carlin in Rag Trade. Edward Baker Duly plays the delightfully awful cad, Max. Each cast member is perfectly cast in their role, giving a solid mix of energy and personality.
There is much to like about this show, with some great one-liners, lively choreography and some lovely comic scenes.
One for hardline Steps fans, a pleasant evening’s entertainment.
