Borley Rectory The Awakening by Steven M Smith and Christopher Jolley.

Based on a true story Borley Rectory The Awakening tells a chilling account about the dark history surrounding the old Rectory which had been built on the grounds of an old Monastery where a Nun was cruelly treated by the Priests who lived there.

However, her spirit is refusing to leave the Rectory grounds and the Priest continues his torment from beyond the grave. They need to work out why she is still there before she can leave the Rectory and finally RIP.

The film is set around the Reverend Henry Bull and his sister Kitty who take over the rectory in 1900 and find themselves dealing with the paranormal activity that their Father had kept from them. They had always suspected something was wrong but he would never talk to them about it.

Borley Rectory was once recorded to have been the most haunted house in the country at one point. This didn’t particularly come across in the film. The action and encounters were on par with other films in its genre and I was slightly disappointed.

There are some “jump scenes” scattered throughout the film. Although not quite as many as I would have expected to see. I wonder if these had been contained to keep in line with the documented evidence about this true story and steered away from too much fantasy and exaggeration.

Julian Glover and Patsy Kensit star in Borley Rectory The Awakening it has been released on digital platforms in the United States from October 7 2025. It will be available in the United Kingdom on DVD/digital from October 13, 2025.

From an interesting historical aspect Borley Rectory The Awakening is worth watching. If you are looking for a psychological thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat this is unlikely to deliver what you are expecting.

Three Stars.
