Noel Coward’s comedy Blithe Spirit is one of his famous plays that has been staged and produced for film and television many times since it was first staged in the West End in 1941.
Author Charles Condomine played by Adam Jackson-Smith is trying to find inspiration for a new character in his next book. His second wife Ruth Condomine (Jenny Rainsford) decides to host a dinner party and invite the local psychic medium Madame Arcati (Susan Wooldridge) to join them and try to evoke the spirits.

Things take an unexpected turn and Madame Arcati manages to raise the spirit of Charles’ deceased wife. Bridgette Amofah glides onto the stage in the role of Elvira, she has an ethereal presence dressed all in white.
However, Elvira doesn’t only change the direction of Charles’ new book it also changes the direction of his marriage. Ruth cannot see Elvira and only becomes aware of her presence when the conversations between Charles and Elvira crossover theirs and Ruth feels she is being insulted. This caused a rift between the couple.

Designer Terry Parsons recreates a wonderful Art Deco setting for this latest production of Blithe Spirit. The finale scene when the spirits react to Charles’ announcement that he would be remaining in the house explodes from every corner of the room. Making many of the audience around me jump.
A special mention has to be made for the Condomine’s housemaid Edith played by Gabriella Foley. An excellent comedy role that never faltered throughout the play.
There are plenty of comedy one-liners keeping the wit of Noel Coward very much alive. I would highly recommend catching this version on stage.
