Lambeth Fringe launches on 25th September. I have caught up with Mengqi to find out her play Baby, Love and Money.

What was the inspiration behind your show?

It’s based on my personal experience as a young Chinese immigrant navigating an unexpected pregnancy in the UK, without marriage. It’s a story about identity, love, motherhood, and culture clash.

How long has your production been in progress?

Around a year. It started from writing fragments, and slowly grew into a full script and production.

Where are you planning on taking the play next?

I’d love to bring it to other London venues and fringe festivals. It’s a story that resonates with many women and immigrants, and I want to keep sharing it.

What would you like audiences to take away from your show?

A more authentic perspective on immigrant life, especially East Asian women’s stories. It’s written and performed by someone who lived it, and I hope it gives space for empathy, laughter, and reflection.

What are you looking forward to most about performing your show?

Putting it out there and connecting with a live UK audience. That shared space between performer and audience is always magic.

Why did you choose your particular Fringe venue?

I’ve worked with the Bread and Roses Theatre before during a reading of this play, it’s an intimate space that fits the tone and honesty of the show perfectly.

Which shows at the Fringe are you planning on watching?

The Dying Wish and Love Me Tomorrow, both sound beautiful and interesting stories.

Have you had any major hurdles to overcome to get this production on stage?

Yes, writing and performing something so personal has been emotional and sometimes challenging. It’s not easy to separate art from lived experience. But I’ve mostly created and performed my own work, so I’m used to doing things independently and building from scratch.
