The BBC launched a new comedy in the 1990s by the phenomenal comedy double act Rik Mayall and Adrian Edmondson as they brought the funny, perverted, and violent flatmates to life, Richard Richard and Edward Elizabeth Hitler.

The comedy despite the themes has become a cult comedy which has thousands of fans, even though the show finished filming in 1994. Thirty years ago! Their Facebook group alone has 21k members.

Underbelly hosted a one off podcast recording of  “Talking Bottom podcast live in Edinburgh, joined by special guest actor and comedian Lee Cornes AKA Bottom’s pub landlord, Dick Head!” The team have launched a new book called Talking Bottom: A Guide to the Cult Sitcom, available in all good bookstores.

The recording was lively and interesting for fans of Bottom although due to Cornes performances in many other comedy shows at the time the conversation switched to other comedies. My favourite cult series that Cornes had a cameo in was Red Dwarf which was mentioned quite a few times.

Fellow co-star Stephen Frost was in the front row of the recording and it was a privilege to listen to Cornes and Frost reminisce about recordings and their interactions on stage with Rik and Ade.

Despite Rik Mayall dying in 2014, eleven years ago his comedy antics and genius live on. As the Young Ones theme tune stated Mayall is definitely someone who only comes along “Once in every lifetime, Comes a love like this” from the almost full auditorium on the day of the recording he is still loved and admired by many fans of a generation.
