Shallowspace Cryotech Feverdream tells the story of a human stuck in deep space and controlled by a computer. These might seem to be all far-fetched ideas born from the Sci-fi genre. However, as AI becomes more prevalent in our day-to-day lives there’s a danger of these sci-fi ideas becoming a devastating reality and man will cease to be as we know it8.
Callie O’Brien takes on the role of August. Woken from a year-long sleep by the onboard computer. Every movement and action is “controlled” in the form of instruction and guidance about how to wake up and come back to life safely as her body defrosts again and performs the required tasks.
The imagery of the frozen blood described reminds me of how meat looks as it defrosts after being removed from the freezer. The way in which the computer interacts with August, it becomes clear that she is nothing more than just one of the few chosen humans to fulfil a task and return to a frozen status. Hardly a future with prospects.
As one of the few humans left in space performing these roles she becomes curious about the other humans and questions what would happen if they were to meet and how it might change the future. However, this isn’t what the computer is going to allow and free will is a distant memory!
However, as August becomes inquisitive and doesn’t believe everything that the onboard computer is telling her things take a turn for the worse. How dare she challenge her superior!
I have never seen Callie perform before and I was totally blown away by her outstanding performance. There was a believable confidence throughout the play that it could be a frightening premonition of what the future could hold.
