The play Single Use is told by Ella
(Verity Mullan) who loves Deliveroo and karaoke. Unfortunately, she is way behind on her rent, in a job she loves but doesn’t appear to be stable and starts to feel the pressure of life and taking responsibility for using so much single-use plastic waste.
Each Chinese takeaway Ella orders adds at least another ten items to the huge plastic waste pile. She isn’t alone either.
Ella begins to get text messages from abroad telling her that her plastic schlep drink bottle has been found in the plastic waste pile thousands of miles away! The constant messages gets her thinking and considering more about how to recycle.
Although there’s plenty of humour throughout Single Use and the urban fox pays frantic visits adding to the comedy. However, there’s a deeper serious issue underneath the comedy side and chaotic lifestyle that Ella leads.
Environmental damage and the waste of single-use plastics affect everyone and recycling and reusable products should be taken more seriously. Find another use for takeaway containers or buy reusable drink cups anything that reduces plastic being sent thousands of miles away.
The story portrayed by Ella is repeated on a mass scale and in many different countries and places. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle should be everyone’s mantra not just a few. However, more council transparency about what happens to these plastics would be helpful to encourage more people to do their part.
