Based on a true story When We Were Young is set in Glasgow during the 1990s where crime and gang culture were rife. Families and friends were left heartbroken by the devastating impact that knife crime had on them and the rest of the community.
When We Were Young starts as a comedy as the friendships grow and they tease, banter and egg each other on as teenagers often do, forming partnerships and generally antics associated with coming of age.
However, it develops into a hard-hitting look at the effects of gang culture and rival fighting for no other reason than where you live and who you represent. Carrying knives is a prerequisite if you are called upon to defend yourself or your friends.
These gangs are all people who have family and friends not just a statistic or headline. When We Were Young is about the friendships, love and dreams of the generation that doesn’t feel they have an alternative, yet deserve so much more and unfortunately never reach their true potential.
The friendship group is rocked when things go a step too far and the rival gang takes revenge without a hint of remorse or second thoughts.
The Edinburgh Fringe version has been cut down to 55 minutes to fit the Fringe time criteria. The version that will be performed in other venues is 85 minutes long with additional material and character.
This play still has a platform on the stage thirty years on from when it was set as knife crime hasn’t disappeared or stopped.
