Four Door Theatre brought Sex and God by Linda McClean to the Edinburgh Fringe. A powerful and moving play that is designed to be thought-provoking. Everyone will know one of these characters as attitudes haven’t progressed as much as they should.
The cast of four ladies brings a different story to life during different decades. The themes are similar exploring religion, sex, abuse, and how much women will tolerate when there are children involved.
Although these stories are fictional in the play. Each one of the characters will be repeated thousands of times over in society.
What does it mean to be a woman? How much power should someone have over you? Sex and God doesn’t “sugarcoat” any of the themes covered by the four women.
It’s hard-hitting and thought-provoking. It needs to be to get the message across that treating women as “sex objects” and “punching bags” is unacceptable.
The line that stood out to me most was “I have a baby inside me that I didn’t ask for” There’s no denying from that sentence what heinous crime happened to her. This isn’t an isolated incident women deal with these situations far too often and men simply get away with it.
This play isn’t about hating men it is about giving a voice to those who are victims of these abuses and deserve to be protected, yet get overlooked or ignored. These stories need to be heard and attitudes need to change.
