Shirley:A Ghost Story-Edinburgh Fringe 2025.

Shirley:A Ghost Story offers a solo performance which tells a dark and intense Ghost tale inspired by the M.R.James story about Shirley Jackson. Bought to the Edinburgh Fringe by Moon Rabbit Theatre.

Shirley explains how she spent her entire life haunted in one way or another from her responsibilities as a child to being married to a man who she realised only wanted her family house and took over all three floors once they were married, leaving her feeling like an outsider in her home.

Although her husband avoided the dirty and dusty attic where Shirley discovers a desk from her childhood. She finds a stack of dusty Ghost stories that had been written by her father during his lifetime, which he had left behind. Probably in the hope that she would find them after he had died.

The attic becomes a sanctuary for Shirley to claim as her own, although whether she is alone is for the audience to decide!

There is no visual “blood and gore” in this production. All the power of this Ghost story is from the storytelling, descriptions and intense performance by an unassuming innocent-looking Shirley who doesn’t appear to be at all “scary” or have any underlying agendas. Looks can often be deceiving.

There’s still an opportunity to catch Shirley:A Ghost Story at the Edinburgh Fringe at The Space, Surgeons’ Hall.
