The story of the Pop and Jazz singer, who was hugely talented and remains a pop legend today, the lady in question is Helen Shapiro. Her story has been brought to the Edinburgh Fringe 2025 by Kingdom Theatre.

14-year-old Lily Martin stars as the younger Helen Shapiro in the Musical Helen Shapiro Walkin’ Back. With a large black beehive hairstyle, Martin steps into the limelight and performs with confidence.

The older Helen whose looking back on her career is performed by Erin Gilliland–Patterson and remembering how and when her successful career began.

The music is a trip down memory lane for many of the audience. The story explains how Shapiro Shotton fame and recorded music in the famous Abbey Road Studios.

The cast switches between the classroom and the recording studio throughout the performance. The musical captures the innocence of the young Shapiro and how she wanted to simply sing and her place in the pop charts was an added bonus.

It is the only production this year that tells the story of Hrlen Shapiro and deserves a full house every night to celebrate the music and life of Shapiro and take a nostalgic trip down memory lane, while enjoying some classic music.
