Bebe Cave brings the Middle Ages to Edinburgh Fringe 2025. With her debut character comedy show CHRISTBRIDE, a female mystic whose hynoptic gaze catches you off guard and draws you in.
Cave stars as Batilda Bigbum from Littledick. Is she or isn’t she a witch? We all know what they did to Witches in the Middle Ages, they burned them at the stake. Can Batilda prove her innocence before she has to face her fate.
Cave performs a vast range of other characters throughout the story from a group of Knights of the Realm and a Nun or two in the Nunnery she escapes to avoid being declared a witch.
Her Mother is incredibly hard on Batilda and puts her down at any given opportunity and reminds her why she is single and can’t even begin to consider finding anyone to marry. When you meet the suitors through the performance it’s hardly surprising she doesn’t want any of them.
It’s a madcap hour of fun and laughter in the Middle Ages, with facts tied into the storyline. Especially the reference to wearing the ring made out of Jesus’s foreskin.
The audience was with Cave throughout the performance and laughed at the jokes and humour. Cave is a competent comedian whose timing was exceptional. There’s a range of quick costume changes and accents during the performance. It’s fast-paced and I was impressed that Cave never slipped up once and kept the audience engaged at all times.
For an Edinburgh Fringe show the staging is very good. Plenty of Jester-style colours are used, and maps and other props allow the Kingdom to come to life.
