Shiva for Anne Frank is a celebration of the famous girl who hid from the Nazi Germans during WWII in Amsterdam. Shiva is traditionally a week-long celebration in the Jewish community to commemorate someone’s life. Frank is unquestionably one of those people.
The house where she hid still attracts tens of thousands of people each year who visit to learn more about her. Anne’s diary is still relevant today particularly in the volatile political climate we are living in, we never know when some.
Rachel McKay Steele has set her show to look at some of the writings that Anne had written in her diary. The focus is mainly on the extracts where she talks about people she finds attractive and the relationship she had with Peter van Pels. Touching upon her feelings towards another woman.
The famous Hollywood Actor Paul Rudd makes an appearance on the stage in the form of (a photograph) of him anyway. This is designed to be used as a comedy relief prop. Although I do think this will be lost on many of the audience as the relevance between the two subjects is quite hard to link together.
Anne and Margot were both diary keepers during the two years in hiding although Anne’s is the most famous one that has been published in more than 70 languages across the world and is known by a high percentage of the population.
As a celebration of the life of Anne Frank, I would like to have heard more about other parts of her life and a bit more of the history. I feel her life deserves to be celebrated.
