Sam Lake: You’re Joking!? Not Another One! Just in case any audience members are unsure Sam Lake begins his show by clearing up any confusion there might be as to whether he is gay or straight. Spoiler alert he is gay.
Lake makes it very clear that he is really welcoming to all the straight men in the audience and simply doesn’t know how you do it!
There is a more “serious” part to his show where Lake reflects on family life growing up and although he never came out to his Mum before she died he later finds out that she knew all the time. Anyone who meets or goes to watch Sam wouldn’t be under any illusions that he was straight.
There’s one particular sketch where Lake retells the day that he was kindly re-educated by a delivery driver on how to spell his surname. The delivery of this joke is far better than the delivery of the original parcel and less argumentative too.
Lake deserves a bigger stage these days. Over the past eight years of watching him perform, he has grown in confidence, polished his comedy delivery, and works with his audiences no matter what they throw at him, verbally not physically.
There’s a message in the particular performance about the way heterosexual men approach comedy compared to gay men. Lake’s final act proves his point perfectly.
