Laurie Magers openly admits that she has, well had a thing for a bad boy, the badder the better. If he is wearing a tag and has a curfew, well that’s even “hotter” and practically husband material.
Do You Accept These Charges is a verbatim play about an ex-boyfriend who just about gets charged with pretty much every crime there is, no matter what he does or has done Magers is going to stand by her man.
We find Magers in the middle of chaos on Christmas Day in a prison visiting room. Even the red and green Christmas trees don’t take the edge off the situation or make it feel more festive.
The outcome that she doesn’t eventually stand by him is inevitable as she wouldn’t be performing at the Edinburgh Fringe. But why and how she leaves I am not going to divulge.
It is safe to say there’s no other play quite like this at the Edinburgh Fringe this year that I have heard of. Magers has an engaging and creative approach to storytelling. Even situations that should make you wince are explained in a manner that the audience is laughing along with her.
Nobody can help who they fall in love with but seriously in this situation please don’t ignore the red flags they are there to protect you not guide you in. Relationships can be a challenge at times but this one appeared to be a daily challenge.
Magers is funny, charismatic and brave for having the courage to stand on the stage and talk about this time in her life which most people would never want to relive let alone share with a room full of strangers.
